Tax for drivers on more than one rideshare app

Lots of drivers drive for more than one app, switching between Uber, DiDi and Ola through a shift. The good news: the tax rules don't change with the app. This guide covers how ABN, GST and income tax work when you drive for multiple rideshare apps, based on ATO guidance.

General info, not tax advice. RideLedger doesn't lodge anything for you. For advice about your situation, talk to a registered tax or BAS agent.

Same ATO rules on every rideshare app

The ATO's ride-sourcing guidance covers taxi travel for a fare through any third-party digital platform.1 Uber, DiDi or Ola: same ABN and GST rules. The ATO doesn't have separate rules for each app.

One ABN and one GST registration for every app

You need an ABN and GST registration from your first trip, whatever you earn.1 You don't need a new ABN for each app. Give your ABN to each platform you drive for.2 If you already have an ABN and GST registration, the ATO says you can use the same GST registration.2

Starting with a second app?

Give that platform your existing ABN. Your BAS stays monthly or quarterly.1 For GST and BAS basics, see GST and BAS for rideshare drivers.

Income from every platform counts

Per the ATO, fares, tips and bonuses from ride-sourcing are assessable income, and you need to lodge a tax return.3 If you drive for Uber and DiDi (or Ola), income from every app goes in your tax return, even if driving is a side gig. That includes each app's earnings in your BAS for the period too.

Combine each app's statements

Each platform gives you its own figures. Add them up for the same period (month, quarter, financial year) so your totals cover every app. Keep the statements: records need to be kept for 5 years after you lodge, on paper or electronically.3

Car costs and expenses are shared across apps

Your car, phone and other costs don't belong to one app. They're costs of your one rideshare business. Claim only the business portion of anything you also use privately, and be able to show how you worked out the split.3 Platform fees or commission are among the ATO's examples of costs you may be able to claim.3

Where your income goes in the tax return

The ATO says ride-sourcing income goes in the Supplementary section, with a Business and professional items schedule. You can lodge with myTax or through a registered tax agent.3
